Since I moved to Nuremberg 6 years ago at least 5 World War II era bombs have been found while excavating different parts of the city.
Apparently the neighboring city of Fürth found another bomb while doing construction work on a new S-Bahn (tram) line. Roughly 3,000 people had to flee their homes, including 175 seniors who live in a nearby nursing home.
Despite being more than 60 years old the 500 kg bomb was still intact and functional. The British made bomb was eventually diffused later that afternoon.
I remember earlier this year when two WWII era 500 kg bombs caused everyone living in the vicinity of our kids (including my boss’ ex-wife and kid) kindergarten to evacuate the neighborhood, which is less than a kilometer from where we live.

It is pretty easy to forget that Nuremberg, Germany was a stronghold that the Allies bombed with an extreme prejudice in World War II. Specifically where we live in Südstadt  which was where many war factories were once located.
This weekend construction workers found a 500kg American bomb buried where they were digging a foundation for a new building. …Halfway between our apartment and where we walk the kids to Kindergarten.
The church in charge of the kids’ Kindergarten was destroyed in the bombing, according to historians over 60 people were killed when it was hit.
I remember in 2006 the city had to evacuate a high school because someone found one of the bombs built into the basement of the school.
